Life Insurance in London, Ontario: Compare 30+ Insurers
Life insurance in London, Ontario from an independent brokerage. Compare 30+ Canadian insurers, see indicative monthly costs and apply by phone, video or e-signature.
Looking for life insurance in London, Ontario? The one thing that doesn’t vary by city is the price. Canadian insurers price by age, health, smoking status, coverage amount and product, so a Londoner in Old North pays exactly what the same person would pay in Byron, Ottawa or Windsor. What varies is the advice, and the situations people in London bring to us.
Hayes Family Insurance is an independent, family-run brokerage founded in Ottawa in 1996 and licensed for the whole of Ontario. We compare term life, whole life, critical illness and disability insurance from 30+ Canadian insurers, we’re paid by the insurers, and our advice is free to you. London clients work with us by phone, video and e-signature and get the same policies at the same prices a broker on Richmond Street would offer.
This page explains what London households typically need, how the process works from a distance, and what coverage roughly costs.
A city that knows insurance
London has a longer relationship with life insurance than almost any city in Canada. One of the country’s best-known life insurers was founded here in the nineteenth century, and the industry is still a major employer, alongside a cluster of financial services, technology and digital media firms downtown and in the north end.
That history has two practical consequences. First, a lot of London residents have good group benefits through an insurer, a bank, the hospitals, Western University, Fanshawe College, the school boards or the City, and many assume that settles the question. It usually doesn’t, for reasons we’ll get to. Second, many people here already understand the products, so our conversations tend to skip the basics and go straight to amounts, terms and which insurer treats a particular health condition best.
The rest of the economy is broad: healthcare through the region’s hospital network, a large university and college population, manufacturing and agri-food across the city and the surrounding county, a major electric-vehicle battery plant under construction in nearby St. Thomas, and a wide base of small businesses in Wortley Village, Hyde Park and along Dundas and Wellington. London also draws families from the GTA who found they could own a detached home in Byron, Westmount, Oakridge or Masonville for what a condo cost back east, and the newer subdivisions in the northwest and southwest of the city are full of them.
What London households typically need
- Young families with a recent mortgage. Enough 20- or 25-year term to clear the house and replace income until the children are grown. Our case study of a young family with a $500K mortgage shows how to size it.
- Employees with a group plan. Group life is commonly 1–2× salary and ends when you leave. A personal policy fills the gap and follows you. Read group vs. individual life insurance.
- Students and recent graduates. Coverage is rarely urgent at 22, but for those with dependants or co-signed loans, or who simply want to lock in insurability, term is very cheap. See life insurance for young adults.
- Healthcare workers. Nurses, technologists and physicians often ask about disability insurance alongside life coverage, since their group long-term disability plans have limits.
- Farm families in Middlesex County. Land, equipment and succession make life insurance central to keeping a farm in the family. Our life insurance for farmers guide covers the specifics.
- Retirees. London has many retirees in Old South, Oakridge and the newer adult-lifestyle communities who want to cover final expenses, offset probate, or leave a legacy. See life insurance for seniors.
How to get life insurance in London
The process runs the same whether you live in Lambeth or Kilally.
- Get in touch. Fill out the quote form or call 343-882-5216. We’ll arrange a 15-minute phone or video call.
- Work out the number. We’ll look at your mortgage, income, dependants, existing group coverage and health, and land on an amount and term. Our guide to how much life insurance you need shows the method.
- Compare 30+ insurers. We quote your profile across the market and send you a side-by-side comparison. The gap between the best and worst price for the same person is often 30% or more.
- Apply electronically. Applications are completed by phone or online and signed with a secure e-signature. If a medical is needed, a paramedical nurse visits you in London at no cost; many healthy applicants under about 50 don’t need one.
- Underwriting. The insurer reviews your file, sometimes with records from your doctor. Two to six weeks is typical.
- Coverage in force. You review the policy, pay the first premium, and keep our number for beneficiary changes, increases, conversions and claims.
Indicative life insurance costs for London residents
Illustrative monthly premiums for a healthy non-smoker buying $500,000 of 20-year term. These are not quotes; your rate depends on age, health, smoking status, coverage amount and insurer, and the same profile is priced differently by different companies.
| Age | Female (indicative) | Male (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | ~$22/month | ~$26/month |
| 40 | ~$31/month | ~$37/month |
| 50 | ~$78/month | ~$99/month |
Smokers pay materially more, and many insurers treat regular vaping and cannabis use the same way; 12 months tobacco-free is the usual requirement for non-smoker rates. For a broader breakdown, see life insurance cost in Ontario and life insurance rates at age 30.
Why an independent broker, even in an insurance town
It’s tempting, in a city where so many people work for an insurer, to buy from the company you know. That gets you one price and one set of underwriting rules.
An independent broker shows you the whole market. We hold contracts with Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, RBC Insurance, Empire Life, iA Financial, Desjardins, BMO Insurance, Equitable, Beneva, Foresters, Canada Protection Plan, Assumption Life, ivari and others. We don’t work for any of them, and we’re regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA); our licence is verifiable on the FSRA public registry.
That breadth matters most when your file isn’t textbook: a diabetes diagnosis, a history of anxiety, sleep apnea, a high BMI, or a large coverage amount that triggers extra underwriting. Insurers differ sharply on these, and placing you with the right one is the job. Our insurance broker in London page covers this across all product lines, and insurance broker vs. buying direct lays out the trade-offs.
Working with us from London
We’ll be direct: our office is at 343 Preston Street in Ottawa, a few hours down the 401 and the 416, and we don’t have a London location. What we offer is an Ontario licence, the same insurer contracts as any local broker, identical prices, and a process designed for phone, video and e-signature from the first call to the policy delivery. Where an application needs a nurse visit, the insurer arranges it at your home.
If in-person meetings matter to you, a local broker is a sensible choice. If you’d rather have the widest comparison and an advisor who picks up the phone, we’d be glad to help.

Frequently asked questions
Are life insurance rates different in London, Ontario?
No. Canadian life insurers do not price by city. Every insurer uses one national rate table, and your premium is determined by your age, health, smoking status, the amount and type of coverage, and the term length. A 40-year-old in London pays the same as a 40-year-old in Ottawa or Windsor for the same policy from the same insurer.
Do I need to meet an advisor in person?
No. The entire process, from the needs conversation to the application and signature, is done by phone, video and secure e-signature. If your application calls for a medical exam, the insurer sends a nurse to your home in London at no cost. We're based in Ottawa, and most of our Ontario clients never visit our office.
I work for an insurance company in London. Isn't my group life enough?
Sometimes, but usually not. Even generous group plans are typically a multiple of salary, which is below what a family with a mortgage and children needs, and the coverage ends or shrinks when you retire or change employers. A personal term policy sized to your actual need, bought while you're young and healthy, fills the gap and stays with you.
Can a Western or Fanshawe student get life insurance?
Yes, and it's inexpensive at that age, but most students don't need it unless someone depends on their income or has co-signed a significant loan. Where it does make sense, locking in a 20- or 30-year term in your early twenties, while you're healthy, is one of the cheapest ways to guarantee future insurability.
